Accidents reported

Two injury accidents were reported in Union City over the weekend. The first occurred Saturday at Highway U.S. 51 and Walker Tanner Road. Michael Shane McDaniel, 33, of 1408 High St., Union City attempted to cross U.S. 51 from Walker Tanner Road in his 1992 Chevy pickup truck when he apparently pulled into the path of a 1999 Kia Sportage driven by Pamela Kay Bird, 45, of 419 West Main St., Obion. Ms. Bird was traveling eastbound on U.S. 51 when McDaniel’s vehicle struck her vehicle on the left rear side, causing it to slide sideways and overturn. She and her passenger, Verna L. Kirk, 77, of 125 Ninth St., Obion, were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City by Regional Emergency Medical Services for possible injuries, according to a Union City Police Department report. McDaniel and his 17-year-old and 14-year-old passengers were uninjured. He was charged with failure to yield the right of way. In an accident Sunday, Mary Ellen Stevens, 64, of 1314 High St., Union City, was charged with failure to obey a traffic control sign after she allegedly struck another vehicle. According to a police report, Ms. Stevens failed to yield at a red light while traveling from South First Street onto Reelfoot Avenue. Her 2006 Saturn S13 struck a 1998 Pontiac Firebird being driven by Joseph A. Mudd, 53, of 622 West Washington Ave., Union City. Mudd was not injured. Ms. Stevens was taken to the emergency room at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City by private vehicle for possible injury to her right arm, police reported. Published in The Messenger 6.16.08
