WCSB prepares new fiscal budget
The month of June marks the finalization of the new fiscal year budget and the topic was foremost on the agenda at the Weakley County School Board meeting this past Thursday afternoon. Though nothing in the budget was specifically discussed, Director of Schools Richard Barber set the date of June 23 as a special meeting for discussion before finalization in early July. “Buses will be bid out. Workers comp premium is up 10 percent from last year. We had hoped to expand Pre-K before the state budget was reduced, but the economy has slowed down and fuel has gone up and it’s caused issues,” Barber explained. “We hope to have a good budget that is workable and is something we can live with.” In other business, the board held a retreat earlier in the day and discusses several items of interest. School board member and planning committee chair Steve Vantrease reported that the topics of operations of schools, differentiated pay plan, transportation services and costs, capital outlay projects, accreditation, honors classes and the school calendar had been discussed, but no decisions were made on an of the subjects yet. “We had very productive discussions,” School board member Barbara Trentham reported. “We looked at all areas to see if we could trim any expenses because of the increase in the cost of everything.” Resolution 6.503 regarding policy on homeless students passed on its second reading. The July monthly meeting was moved from July 3 to July 1 due to holiday conflict, but may ultimately be unnecessary if the board is able to finalize the budget on June 23.
