A local business owner remained humble and even dolled out credit for others when he was honored with a Patriot Award last week. Cyndy Richardson, a 30CSSB soldier out of Humboldt, said on Thursday she was honored to be employed by Brian Smith of Sideline Physical Therapy and Fitness Center of Martin. She felt compelled to recognize Smith for his generosity as her employer. Richardson faces a second deployment in Operation Iraqi Freedom. “Cyndy deserves all of the credit. This somehow seems backwards. I have a lot of respect for her and her job. I know what a sacrifice she makes,” Smith said during the award presentation. Dan Callahan, a representative of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, was on hand to present the award. “Our mission is to gain and maintain support from all public and private employers. We do this through education. We can’t do it without this support. Employers, such as yourself, allow our guardsmen to carry out their military duties without having to worry about what they will do when they get home,” Callahan remarked. He added the military make-up is at least half enlisted in the guard or reserves. There are 150,000 guardsmen and reservists in 77 countries across the world on any given day. “I just want to echo what Cyndy and Dan have said. I have been in the guard 27 years and the keys to a successful guardsman are spouse and family support as well as employer support. You (Smith) have made it to where she can do both. I wish we had more employers like you. She doesn’t have to worry about what she is going to do when she gets home,” Lt. Col. Tommy Baker of 30CSSB of Humboldt reiterated on Thursday. “When a person is deployed, everyone feels it,” Callahan added. The Patriot Award is granted to those employers nominated by an employee for their continued support of military personnel.
