SFHS students participating in Boys, Girls State

Anna Seratt is representing South Fulton High School at Girls State on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro this week. Alexander McWhirt is having a very similar experience at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, where the annual Boys State experience is headquartered. The week-long programs offer outstanding rising seniors from high schools across the Volunteer State the opportunity to “live” in communities with other students as they learn how government functions. Students run for mock office and campaign among their fellow students and then experience the ways elected office holders fulfill their responsibilities. The program includes historical perspectives on the Volunteer State, instruction in the political process and an opportunity to interact with other young adults interested in service and learning. Miss Seratt is the daughter of Charles and Wanda Seratt and is a member of Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the softball team and the yearbook staff. She has also been secretary of the junior class at SFHS this year. She is a Top Ten academic student, a delegate to Student Congress on Policies in Education, a Tennessee Scholar and an Obion County Challenge Student. She has also been selected to attend Nurse Camp for three years. McWhirt, the son of Dr. Ed and Beth McWhirt, is a member of Beta Club and is also involved in Boy Scouts, the SFHS football team and the school band. He is a Tennessee Scholar and an Obion County Challenge Student. Alternates selected for the honor included Brooke Kane, daughter of R.K. and Kim Kane, and Corbin Hawks, son of Mike and Melanie Hawks. Miss Kane is Student Council president-elect, a member of the SFHS basketball team and reporter for Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America. A member of Fulton First United Methodist Church, she is also a member of the congregation’s Methodist Youth Fellowship and the church choir. Hawks is a member of Beta Club and the SFHS football team and is a Top Ten student and Tennessee Scholar, as well as being an Obion County Challenge Student. Published in The Messenger 5.28.08
