UCHS Class of 2008 to don caps and gowns

Members of the Class of 2008 at Union City High School are requesting a show of respect for their hard work and accomplishments from those who come to celebrate their success Sunday evening at 8 at War Memorial Stadium on the UCHS campus. As the names of the 82 graduates are read by principal Barry Duncan and they step forward to receive their diplomas from school board chairman Janice Faulk, the graduates are asking their families and friends to rise and stand in silent tribute to their individual success stories.
The time for a jubilant shout and the tossing of mortarboards high into the evening sky will come later, when each graduate has enjoyed their own moment of respectful glory.
Members of the class, joined by Duncan, Mrs. Faulk and Director of Schools Gary Houston, will process from the front door of the school they have used so many times before to begin and end a school day and will march to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” to a special setting on the football field. Ushers Julian Moss, Thomas Turner, Colton Speed, B.J. Marshall and Peter Wilkes will direct them to their seats.
The welcome and meditation will be delivered by graduate Maddy Harris and the salutatorian’s address will be given by Rachel Triplett, who is also class president.
Adam Moon will deliver remarks reserved for the graduate with the highest grade point average — the valedictorian of the UCHS Class of 2008.
Once each graduate has received a diploma and heard his or her future plans listed, the class will be “accepted” by Houston and the audience will be asked to stand to sing the Alma Mater with the graduates.
Then is the time for clapping and shouting, hugging and high-fiving, the graduates say.
Members of the class, whose sponsors are Andrea Byford, Trudi Collins, Debbie Cunningham, Lance Morgan and J.B. Murphy, have received more than $1.5 million in scholarship offers, so there is much to celebrate.
