UTM baseball star
named All-OVC

UT Martin baseball standout Wes Patterson was named to the Ohio Valley Conference’s All-Freshman team Tuesday night in Paducah.
Patterson played in 37 games and started 35. He hit .297 with 35 hits, 10 home runs and 29 RBI. He led the Skyhawks with the 10 homers and his .297 batting average was the fourth-best on the team. On the mound, he was 2-3 with a team-high four saves and 20 strikeouts.
“It’s an outstanding honor to have the coaches in our league recognize Wes for his accomplishments,” said Bubba Cates, the Skyhawks head coach. “Part of this honor was Wes’ ability to do two things – pitch and produce offensively.”
Patterson, who prepped at Briarcrest High School in Memphis, gives UTM three consecutive seasons with a player on the OVC All-Freshman team. Pitcher Eric Walker was named to the team in 2006, while shortstop Shayne Martin was selected for the all-rookie squad in 2007.

DSCC coach Puckett
fast on recruiting trail

New Dyersburg State Community Women’s Basketball Coach Rian Puckett has hit the recruiting trail hard in his first two weeks at the college and he has already added two incoming freshmen to his roster.
Johna Wade, a 5-foot-6 point guard from Koshkonong, Mo., signed a national letter of intent to play women’s basketball at DSCC recently. Wade averaged nearly 25 points per game her senior season.
Also signing with Dyersburg State is Kala Tyus, a 5-foot-11 forward from Crockett County High School. The athletic forward averaged 13 points and seven rebounds per game for the Lady Cavaliers this year.
