Letter to WCP Editor

By: By Cathy Barnett

Dear Weakley County Press,
You know after they crucified Jesus Christ, nothing should surprise me! However, Tuesday’s paper made me sick! I can’t believe the front page story was to slander Dennis Suitor’s name and reputation. I can’t believe that anyone in the Martin community would not be aware that he is the main man in charge and behind the most successful things we have going. It is because of Dennis Suiter that our little town of Martin received the Cal Ripken series not only once but an unheard of twice!!
It is because of Dennis Suiter that we have the Christmas Village that really helps stock the shelves at We Care to feed the needy in Weakley County. Oh, and lets not forget that to top that we have the World Series here this summer. Spike Hupka, the baseball commissioner said,
We wouldn’t have even considered Martin for the Cal Ripken series or the World Series if it weren’t for Dennis Suiter. His attention to detail and running such a smooth operation in Martin is what brought us here!” Now, they’re coming to Martin and you’re trying to get rid of Dennis?
You know yourself if you’ve ever been audited that it is absolutely one of the most nerve wrecking experiences. You have to go back and try to remember and justify your every move. After an intense state audit if all they could dig up was $89.98, then that my friend is not a front page story!
You know I personally requested this paper to cover what I considered some front-page news but it wasn’t done. I asked for a reporter when the whole community came together to fill the old Fred’s building for an auction to help We Care buy the building. The radio station did a live report but the paper never even sent a reporter. I requested a reporter to last year’s first annual Martin Art in the Park. We had about 30 artists and 1,000 visitors but no reporter! Just what kind of newspaper are you that we can’t get front page coverage or any page coverage when the whole community comes together for an event but you can make sure that you ruin the reputation of a man that has given his life’s work to our town?!
Give me a break.
Just for the record, I am not a relative of Dennis Suiter. I’m not even sure if he would call me a friend. I’m just an observer of him and his wife’s passion for our town. I just had to write this letter because I serve a loving God and know that any condemning thought comes from hell!

(Ed. note : The Martin Art in the Park event was promoted in the May 31 and June 21, 2007 editions of the Weakley County Press. The Weakley County Press has covered numerous events for many non-profit and philanthropic organizations over the years, many times with the events appearing on the front page. The auction for We Care was held in August 2003 from our research, which was before the current editor’s tenure at the paper which began in Februrary 2004 and one of the first newspapers under the current leadership was a Feb. 10, 2004 story on the front page about We Care paying off the building at their current location. The Press, including the management and publishers, felt a need to respond to the allegations made by Mrs. Barnett in her letter. Thank you.)
