A driver and her young passenger were injured Friday afternoon when their vehicle struck a utility pole in the 2900 block of East Reelfoot Avenue in Union City.
Alice L. Hampton, 24, of 1309 Valley Road, Hickman, Ky., and her passenger, 3-year-old Rumarriezz Westbrook, were both taken by Regional Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City following an accident about 2:15 p.m., according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police reported that their investigation determined Ms. Hampton fell asleep or passed out, which caused her 2003 Nissan Altima to cross several lanes of traffic heading westbound. The vehicle went up on a curb, causing the driver’s side tire to blow out, and then continued west on a sidewalk, striking a utility pole.
After the pole was struck, it shook and caused a street light down the street to fall to the ground and hit a parked vehicle on its hood, resulting in damage, according to the report.
While investigating, police determined Ms. Hampton had the 3-year-old child behind the driver’s seat in a booster seat rather than in a child restraint device required by law. Both the driver and the child were injured, but the extent of their injuries was not known at the time of the report.
Ms. Hampton was charged with failure to maintain right side of roadway, child restraint violation and no proof of insurance, police reported.
