Zoo adds 2 gorillas
MEMPHIS (AP) — Two female gorillas have arrived in Memphis to join the zoo’s lone male gorilla on exhibit.
Kebara, an 11-year-old, and her 19-year-old mother, Penny, were shipped Friday by FedEx from the San Diego Zoo. They will be the first female gorillas the zoo has had in 15 years.
The zoo is not looking to breed the females with Mwelu, (m-WAY’-loo), the 21-year-old male gorilla that arrived earlier this year. Instead, they are trying to create a family group that can someday support young gorillas.
In San Diego, the two female gorillas helped to care for the babies in the group. They are currently on birth control and cannot breed.
