|Expect the Union City track program to hit the ground running in its attempt to secure more sectional berths at the Region 7A-AA meet. |
Today’s slate of running event finals at the 7A-AA meet is set to start at 3 p.m. (weather permitting) on the campus of the University School of Jackson.
Already known after the preliminaries in select running events on Tuesday is the fact that Scott Huff and Curtis Pitts have clinched spots in today’s 110-meter hurdles finale by finishing third and sixth, respectively.
Huff and Pitts are also both entered in today’s 300-meter hurdles with the former’s previous best time in the event lining up near the coveted top four finish needed to advance to the May 16 sectional meet in Memphis.
Meanwhile, senior Immanuel Rogers is set to try and outlast the field in the 1600-meter run with junior Cody Speed and sophomore Josh Battee each taking to the track in the 800-meter race.
In relay action, UC will enter Dexter Hopson — who already has a pair of sectional field event berths — along with Tony Wilkins, Markeem Ware, Scott Huff and Josh Nix in the 400-meter and 800-meter relay.
The Twisters will also field a team in the 1600 and 3200-meter relay with Armondo Ward, Cody Speed, Marlin Wilson, Markeem Ware, Cameron Graham, Nik Brooks, Speed and Battee among those listed as possibles to compete in the events.
On the girls’ side, first-year Union City track coach Darren Bowling has elected not to take any long-distance runners.
However, it is already known after Tuesday’s preliminaries that Kierra Davis and Shanisha Huff — who finished seventh and eighth, respectively — will compete in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles.
Davis and Huff will also take part in the 300-meter hurdles this afternoon.
Otherwise, Labrica Ward and Ana Hart will join Davis and Huff for the speedy 400-meter relay, with Bianca Watson, Micah Warford, Nakia Powell and Hart comprising the Lady Tornadoes’ 800-meter relay team.
