Lady Dawgs’ long road trip pays off
The Gleason Lady Bulldogs had to pack their traveling bags for their postseason debut in the 2008 District 14-A Softball Tournament.
The Lady Dawgs left a little extra room for a win in those bags and weren’t disappointed.
Gleason traveled to Tiptonville and swatted the host Lake County Lady Falcons, 6-1, on Thursday. The loss brought an end to the Lady Falcons’ season.
After a scoreless first inning, Gleason senior Riley Auvenshine got the hit parade started with a leadoff single. Taylor Stout, Breeanna Wallace and Lacie Trevathan also singled in the GHS at-bat. Auvenshine and Stout both scored. Gleason left the bases loaded, but did grab a 2-0 advantage.
Thanks to three errors, Lake County pushed a runner to third base with two outs. GHS starter Taylor Wharton got the next Lady Falcon to fly out to Amy Spain at shortstop to keep the Lady Falcons off the board.
The third inning provided Gleason with its biggest offensive boost. The Lady Dawgs rapped out four more hits and plated four runs. Three of those hits were of the extra base variety. Katlin Gaylord opened with a single. Auvenshine hammered a double as did Stout. Wallace reached on an error and Kayla Goodlow smashed a triple. Gaylord, Auvenshine, Stout and Wallace all scored for a 6-1 lead.
Gleason weathered a seventh-inning rally attempt by Lake County. The Lady Falcons used a leadoff single to bring in their only run in the 6-1 loss to the Lady Bulldogs.
Auvenshine was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two doubles. Stout was 2-for-4 with two runs and a double.
Gleason’s win advanced the Orange and Black to a Monday match-up with South Fulton.
