The UT Martin rodeo team wrapped up its Ozark Region schedule this past weekend at North Arkansas College in Harrison. The men’s team finished third with 605 points, while the women’s team finished fourth with 180 points.
The UT Martin men and women’s teams finished second in the Ozark Region and both have qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo set for June at Casper, Wyo.
“Finishing second in the region is good for both teams,” said John Luthi, UT Martin’s head coach. “We will send two teams to the college finals and that’s more than any other school in our region.”
Nicole Todd led the women’s effort at North Arkansas by winning the barrel racing event. Todd won the first go with a time of 17.65. She was second in the short round with a time of 17.88, but won the average with a total time of 35.53.
UT Martin’s Molly Alexander also worked the barrels and finished second in the first go with a time of 17.75. She claimed second in the average with a total time of 35.72.
“Nicole has had an outstanding spring season,” Luthi said. “It is obvious she carried our team.”
Todd won the average in the barrels in five rodeos this season. She had three other top five finishes this season for a total of eight top five finishes out of 10 rodeos.
“She’s had a great year, and the good Lord willing her horse stays healthy for the college finals,” Luthi said.
On the men’s side, John Beckwith finished second in the calf roping average. He split fifth in the first go with a time of 14.0. He was second in the short round with a time of 11.0.
Senior Ty Atchison finished second in the saddle bronc average. Atchison was second in the first go with a 73-point ride and third in the short round with a 69-point ride.
“Ty had a good rodeo despite the stock he drew,” Luthi said.
UT Martin’s Boyd Quinley was second in the steer wrestling average with a total time of 11.1. He was second in the first round with a time of 4.3 and third in the short round with a time of 6.8.
