MARTIN, Tenn. — Junior Nate Walters hit a walk-off double to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning and sophomore Shayne Martin scored from first base to give UT Martin a 6-5 victory over visiting Belmont University in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Skyhawk Field.
The Skyhawks led 5-3 going into the seventh inning and were three outs from winning their ninth game of the season. In the top of the seventh Belmont’s Carlo Testa singled to right field off reliever Wes Patterson. The Skyhawk pitcher then gave up a two-run home run to Derek Willy. The homer tied the game at 5-all.
The Skyhawks (9-32) jumped in front of Belmont (18-28) with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior William Blackmon’ double extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Patterson had a sacrifice fly in the inning for an RBI.
Patterson collected his second RBI of the game in the third, plating a run with his second sacrifice fly of the day.
Belmont made it a one-run game by scoring three in the fourth inning. Nate Woods hit a two-run homer in the inning.
UT Martin made it a 5-3 game in the fourth inning when Belmont walked in a run. Patterson had two RBI in the game, while Mark Hartsfield was 4-for-4 in the game. Shayne Martin was 3-for-3 in the game with an RBI.
Patterson pitched one inning for his third win of the season.
In the second game, Belmont scored first and never looked back en route to a 14-5 victory over the Skyhawks.
Belmont scored three runs in the first inning and two runs each in the second inning and third inning. The Bruins blew the game open with six runs in the sixth inning.
UTM avoided the shutout when Blackmon hit his seventh home run of the season in the second inning. The Skyhawks scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Blackmon was the only Skyhawk to have multiple hits in the second game.
Daniel Wagner and Nate Woods hit homers for Belmont. Brandon McCall had a double with four RBI in the game.
Brian Kelly earned the win for Belmont on the mound, while Andrew Bixby suffered his first loss of the season.
The Skyhawks will return to action this weekend when they play a three-game, OVC series at Austin Peay.
