Devils’ postseason ends prematurely due to costly errors
Had it not been for errors, South Fulton most likely would have punched its ticket into the District 14A Baseball Tournament Tuesday.
Unfortunately, the local Devils committed five miscues with zero of their runs allowed earned in a 6-5 extra-inning defeat to Bradford in play-in game action.
SF had led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
Then, the error bug bit hard with B’ford adding a pair in the third, three in the sixth and one in the eighth to grab the victory.
Bradford will now advance to play Union City in the first round of the District 14A Tournament at 4:30 Thursday. South Fulton’s season ends at a mark of 6-19-1 under rookie skipper Jeremy McFarland — a tie better than a year ago’s 6-20 mark.
In other action regular season softball finales Tuesday, UC drubbed Trenton 12-2 while SF’s girls fell to Hickman County 6-5.
On tap, the Lady Twisters have a rematch against Trenton at home in the opening round of the District 14A Tournament Thursday at 4 p.m., while SF will host either Humboldt or Bradford Friday afternoon in the tourney’s opening round at 4:30.
The following is a roundup of Tuesday’s games as reported to The Messenger.
BASEBALL
Bradford 6, So. Fulton 5 (8)
SF senior Daniel King rung up 14 strikeouts in his six innings of work, but it was not enough to keep his team from a season-ending defeat.
Jonathan Clouse came on to pitch the final 11/3 innings and was charged with the loss.
At the dish, the Red Devils were led by Jared Johnston (2-for-3) with two runs batted in, while senior Bart Netherland was good for one run chased home.
Junior Sam Curtis ended the outing 2-for-4 with Clouse adding a single and double and King contributing a lone safety.
The game was the final in a SF uniform for both King and Netherland.
SOFTBALL
Union City 12, Trenton 2
In what may have been a preview of things to come in the first round of the district tourney, the Lady Twisters dominated Peabody.
UC’s Hannah Jackson — who was called out on a controversial play the day before in the Lady Tornadoes’ one-run loss to South Fulton that gave the Devilettes the regular season sub-district title — left the yard with her first-ever home run and finished the outing with four runs batted in.
Senior Allison McCullough had a trio of RBI in her last regular season home game with Corey Anne Youree, Jade Davis, Taylor Hargrove and Heather Gilliland all good for one ribbie.
Meanwhile, Allison Bruff crossed the pay station once with Angela Chesteen adding a single to round out the 10-hit onslaught for the Lady Tornadoes (19-13).
On the hill, Youree squared her personal mark at 4-4 with Katie Hawks toeing the rubber for two innings.
Hickman Co. 6, So. Fulton 5
Curt Lee’s Devilettes came down from the high of claiming the District 14A North Division championship quickly with Tuesday’s loss to the Lady Falcons.
