Local hopes hinging on 6 Twisters
The local tennis hopes to advance to the Region 7-7AA Tournament will hinge on six Union City netters this afternoon.
After Saturday’s action at the District 14A-AA Tournament on the campus UT Martin, only one Twister representative remains in both girls’ and boys’ singles and doubles.
This afternoon, Lady Twister Caroline Kirkland will take on Greenfield’s Mallory Robinson in semifinal action, which is set to begin at 4:30.
In girls’ doubles action, Union City’s Rachel Triplett and Sara Gilliam square off with Summer Hoke and Melissa McCartney in the semis, with the boys’ tandem of Brett White and Dylan Chapman scheduled to face Dyersburg’s Tallon Scott and Blake Hilgenkamp.
UC’s Ben Woods can attempt to advance to the regional tournament for a second straight year if he is able to defeat Milan’s Micah Watson in the semifinals this afternoon.
On Saturday, Kirkland survived a scare in the opening round to down Milan’s Jasmina Alagic 8-4.
Kirkland then coasted through her quarterfinal matchup — an 8-0 winner — over Gibson County’s Cindel Oakley.
In other girls’ singles action involving locals, Anna White advanced to the semifinals before ultimately falling 8-5 to Milan’s Kristen Garcia, with Obion Central’s Samantha Scott a winner over Abby Long 8-5 in play-in action.
Scott was then dropped 8-0 by top girls’ seed Katie McCall, from Greenfield.
Robinson downed Central’s other entry Shannon Trout 8-1.
Girls’ tandem action saw Triplett and Gilliam better Trenton’s Kellie Joyner and Leslie Stovall 8-5 in the quarterfinals with Mary Elizabeth Harpole and Sarah Triplett falling to G’field’s Taren Hatcher and Hannah Rawls 8-3 in the first round.
Central’s Angel Rhoades and Darcey Kirk dominated Gibson County’s Becca Hill and Lauren Rogers 8-1 in play-in action before falling to D’burg’s Molly Herman and Cameron Tipton 8-0 in the first round.
The Lady Rebs tandem of Jessica Crackel and Tiffany Logan fell 8-1 to Sarah Epperson and Jordan Gunn.
On the boys’ side, Ben Woods is a victory away from advancing to the regional tourney for the second straight year.
The district’s overall No. 1 seed received a bye through the first round and handled Peabody’s Thomas Adams with ease 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
Twister teammate Philip Wesner was thumped from contention thanks to a 8-2 loss to Milan’s Brandon Dowdy.
Wesner had advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-0 shutout of D’burg’s Matt Wolfe.
Meanwhile, Watson took out Obion Central’s Carson Castellaw Saturday 8-1 in the opening round of action with Jonathan Fisher an 8-2 victor over OC’s Matt Moore.
In boys’ doubles action, White and Chapman — who had a bye through the opening round — shellacked Milan’s Blake Garcia and Larry Robison 8-1.
Twister teammates Carlos and Julio Fuentes were not as fortunate in an 8-3 defeat to Dyersburg’s Rick Van Sant and Jacob Landfield.
For Central, Levi Bell and T.J. Riddle came oh-so-close to advancing in a 9-7 defeat to Westview’s Reggie and Russell Morrow, with the squad’s other duo, Bradley Harris and D.J. Higgins, on the losing end 8-2 to Milan’s Garcia and Robison.
