Lady Chargers crush Crockett Co.
The Westview Lady Chargers kept the heat on their district opponents with a 10-0 shutout win over host Crockett County’s Lady Cavaliers Wednesday in Alamo.
The Westview girls got another outstanding pitching performance with sophomore Shanna Chappell recording a one-hitter. Chappell struck out four and didn’t allow a walk or hit a Lady Cav batter. The lone hit she gave up was a single.
The Westview bats were a bit busier than the Lady Cavs’ sticks. The Lady Chargers notched nine hits in their win and took advantage of two Crockett County errors to bring the 10-run rule into effect at the end of five innings.
At the plate for Westview, Kelly Gaston was the lone Lady Charger to record two hits. Gaston also scored two runs.
Sam Giesler topped her by crossing home plate three times. Giesler was 1-for-1 with a single and drew two walks. She also had a pair of RBIs.
Mary Kirk Mesimer was the only other Lady Charger with two RBIs in the win.
Westview raced into the lead in the top of the first. Gaston and Giesler both singled in the at-bat. Jenna Hazelwood reached on an error. All three Lady Chargers touched home for a 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, Westview put three more runs on the scoreboard in the third. Again, the trio of Gaston, Hazelwood and Giesler scored. Ashley Bynum had an RBI double in the scoring outburst.
Westview’s biggest inning of the game was the fourth when the Lady Chargers plated their final four runs. Katelyn Veteto got things started with a one-out single. She advanced all the way around the bases as did Giesler, Emily Belote and Carmesha Owens to close out scoring in the Lady Chargers’ 10-0 win.
