IT’S IN THE BAG — E.W. James & Sons Supermarkets president Lee Ann James and her father, David James, owner and operator of the supermarket chain, show one of the reusable shopping bags now being sold at the grocery stores as an environment-friendly option for shoppers. Company officials said the choice is no longer just paper or plastic for customers of family-owned E.W. James & Sons Supermarkets. The reusable bags, being sold for $1 each, hold the equivalent of two plastic bags and are also much stronger. The multi-use bags cut down considerably on the 1,000 plastic bags the average family will use each year. Increasing customer interest prompted the search for an environment-friendly alternative to the current plastic bags. “Everyone is aware of the need to protect and improve the environment,” Ms. James said. “These bags allow E.W. James & Sons to make a positive impact on our environment and our communities.” In addition to being stronger than traditional plastic, the reusable bags have a flat bottom, allowing them to stand on their own and making filling, transportation and unpacking groceries much easier. “Our customers are looking for smarter, more convenient ways to shop,” Ms. James added. “Not only are the bags a benefit to the environment, but they benefit our customers as well. We continuously strive to improve the communities our stores are in; these bags are just another step in the right direction.”
