|UC, OC net hopefuls set for district duels |
|It’s tennis tournament time in Tennessee. |
Union City and Obion Central will take the nets at UT Martin Saturday along with their District 14A-AA brethren for the start of the league’s postseason tournament.
On Saturday, opening round and quarterfinal action will take place, beginning at 9 a.m., with the semifinals slated to start at 4:30 Monday and the finals set for the same time on Tuesday.
UC’s Ben Woods leads the lists of locals entered into the tournament as the boys’ top seed with a bye through the first round.
Meanwhile, Twister teammate Philip Wesner is the third-rated boys’ player and he will take on Matt Wolfe.
OC’s Matt Moore is the other local representative and he will battle GC’s Johnathan Fisher with the winner facing the district’s overall second seed Max Gearin in the quarterfinals.
In boys’ doubles play, UC’s Brett White and Dylan Chapman have a bye through the first round with a possible battle against Central’s Bradley Harris and D.J. Higgins on the horizon Saturday if the OC duo can get past Milan’s Blake Garcia and Larry Robison.
In the other duo match of local interest, Levi Bell and T.J. Riddle will battle Westview’s Reggie and Russell Morrow.
On the girls’ side, Lady Twister Caroline Kirkland is the overall No. 2 seed and she will face the winner of a play-in match between Trenton’s Miranda Diebel and Milan’s Jasmina Alagic.
Union City junior Anna White is rated fourth overall in the event and set to face Lady Pioneer Sydney Allen with OC’s Shannon Trout hoping for an upset against the event’s No. 3 seed Mallory Robinson (GF).
Central teammate Samantha Scott will take part in a play-in match against Dyer County’s Abby Long with the winner to face G’field’s Katie McCall.
Girls’ doubles action has UC’s Rachel Triplett and Sara Gilliam — rated as the No. 2 tandem in the event — battling GC’s Merrilee Clark and Suzanne Bell.
Otherwise, Lady Rebels Jessica Crackel and Tiffany Logan square off against Dyersburg’s Sarah Epperson and Jordan Gunn with Darcey Kirk and Angel Rhoades attempting to solve the duo of Rebecca Hill and Lauren Rogers (GC).
The final girls’ doubles match with local implications has Union City’s Mary Elizabeth Harpole and Sarah Triplett against Greenfield’s Taren Hatcher and Hannah Rawls.
