Accidents result in injuries
Injuries were reported in a trio of traffic accidents that occurred late last week and over the weekend in Union City.
Three people sustained injuries in a crash about 9:55 a.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of West Main Street, according to a Union City Police Department report released today.
Among those injured were Aubrey D. Smith, 77, of 4443 Possum Trot Road, Troy; and Mary Ann Gilliland, 35, of 511 Highway 51 South, Troy, and her passenger, William Pride, 31, also of 511 Highway 51 South, Troy.
Police reported Smith was eastbound in the 1600 block of West Main Street and Ms. Gilliland was also in the eastbound lane, attempting to make a lefthand turn into a private drive. Ms. Gilliland, according to a witness, had activated her left turn signal.
Smith apparently did not see Ms. Gilliland stopped waiting for traffic to clear and struck the rear of her 1993 Plymouth Voyager mini-van, forcing it off the roadway and into a ditch on the north side of the highway. After striking Ms. Gilliland’s vehicle, Smith veered over into the westbound lane and struck a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Frank W. Brown, 57, of 4606 Mount Zion Road, Union City, who was westbound on West Main Street, according to the report.
Smith’s 2001 Chevy Malibu came to rest in the middle of the roadway after striking Brown’s vehicle and Brown came to rest just off the shoulder of the road at the private drive into which Ms. Gilliland was attempting to turn.
Smith told police he did not see Ms. Gilliland and did not remember applying his brakes prior to the incident.
Both Smith and Ms. Gilliland were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City by Regional Emergency Medical Services ambulance for treatment of injuries. Pride was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Possible injury was reported to Brown but he was not transported from the scene or treated at the scene, police reported. Smith was charged with following too close, according to the report.
The second accident with injuries occurred just before 3 p.m. Friday on West Reelfoot Avenue on the far west side of Union City.
Injuries were reported to Manisha M. Patel, 36, of 2204 Stonewall St., Union City; and Elvis Rudd, 83, of 4462 Old Turnpike Road, Kenton, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Patel was pulling out of the parking lot of Country Hearth Inn on West Reelfoot Avenue when his 2002 Cadillac DeVille collided with a 2002 Buick LeSabre driven by Evelyn D. Rudd, 77, also of 4462 Old Turnpike Road, Kenton, who was southbound on West Reelfoot Avenue.
There was severe damage to both vehicles, police reported.
Patel and Elvis Rudd were both transported by REMS ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City for treatment.
Patel was charged with failure to yield the right of way, police reported.
The final accident with possible injury to the driver occurred about 4:40 p.m. Sunday on Tyson Drive at Granger Street on the east side of the city, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Holly S. Pollock, 17, of 2952 Gibbs Road, Union City, was eastbound on Tyson Drive when she apparently lost control of the 2002 Toyota Echo she was driving. The vehicle crossed over into the other lane and ran off the roadway, then struck a guard rail, slid down the guard rail and came to rest with the vehicle facing north, straight across from where Granger Street intersects with Tyson Drive.
The vehicle sustained severe damage to the driver’s side front corner panel and front end, according to the report.
Miss Pollock was taken by her mother to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City for treatment of possible injury, police reported. She was charged with failure to maintain control.
