A groundbreaking ceremony, Feb. 8, in Parsons, will mark the start of the new University of Tennessee at Martin/Parsons Center. The 19,000-square-foot technologically advanced facility, expected to open in spring 2009, is a joint project of the City of Parsons and Decatur County. The center will house classes that have been offered since early 2007 at Decatur County Riverside High School.
The ceremony is set for 12:30 p.m., at the Municipal Building, 535 Tennessee Ave. South, Parsons. The group will then move to the construction site, on Hwy. 641/Tennessee Avenue North, for the groundbreaking.
Among those attending the ceremony for the fourth UT Martin extended campus will be Dr. John Petersen, University of Tennessee president, and Dr. Thomas Rakes, UT Martin chancellor. Joining them will be Bill Duffy, Extended Campus and Continuing Education executive director, and Jason Rushing, UT?Martin/Parsons Center director.
The center gained approval of the University of Tennessee board of trustees and Tennessee Higher Education Commission in fall 2006.
