Cumberland County Playhouse will hold professional and experienced volunteer auditions on February 6th (evening) and 7th (early afternoon) by appointment for adults and teens for the comedy with heart, FIRST BAPTIST OF IVY GAP, and the American Heartland Premiere of the new musical FLIGHT OF THE LAWNCHAIR MAN.

Guest Director Bari Newport, former Associate Artistic Director of the Florida Rep, will join Producer Jim Crabtree in seeing adult and older teenage women for FIRST BAPTIST, which is about a group of women and girls who volunteer at a Tennessee church in the 1940s, during World War II. Then, in Act II, we see them 25 years later in the late 1960’s.

Characters include: Luby, 50’s to 70’s a widowed church member whose son is fighting in the war. Olean, early 20’s to 40’s, a dreamer and romantic. Mae Ellen, 20’s to 40’s, the church’s rebellious organist (an actor/keyboard player is ideal). Edith, the pastor’s “take charge” wife, 40’s to 60’s. Sammy, late teens to early 40’s, a nonmember of the church, with a secret. Vera, a prominent, wealthy member, also with a secret (40-65).

FLIGHT OF THE LAWNCHAIR MAN is a medium-sized musical with a cast of 12 to 16. Roles include Jerry, 30’s, lyric baritone or tenor, likeable, ordinary, a dreamer. Gracie, the girlfriend (soprano, mix/belt), late 20’s/30’s, an enthusiast, loves life. Big Jack Preston (30’s, high baritone) a man’s man, great in his pilot’s uniform, confident, a bit full of himself. Blaire 20’s or 30’s (mezzor or soprano/mix), a bubbly, ditsy stewardess whose surface hides real competence. Mother Gorman, Jerry’s Mother (soprano/mix belt) a loving nag and steamroller, she wants everything for Jerry, except foolishness and failure. Leonardo Da Vinci (tenor), the Renaissance man, who invents human wings on paper. Charles Lindbergh (baritone), the great aviator, a lot like Jimmy Stewart. Amelia Earhart (mezzo/mix belt), the great aviatrix, a lot like Katharine Hepburn. Plus neighbors, Wal-mart employees, commuters, neighborhood kids and teens, TV Reporter, and NASA Official.

FIRST BAPTIST, sponsored by Crossville-Ford-Lincoln-Mercury, begins rehearsal March 4th, opens March 27th, and runs until June 14th. In rep, 2-4 times per week, with a few touring dates in the Southeast. It may be extended, possibly with cast changes, and/or return and tour into the Fall. LAWNCHAIR MAN, sponsored by Crossville, Inc, begins rehearsal April 15th or so, opens May 15th and runs through July 11th. Auditioners should prepare a short (1 minute) contrasting monologue and song (16-24 bars) and have a second, contrasting song and monologue if requested.
