ECCE courses cater to youth
Young writers, future equestrians, college-bound youths can take advantage of upcoming courses offered by the University of Tennessee at Martin Office of Extended Campus and Continuing Education.
“Young Writers’ Clubhouse,” a series of writing experiences for third- through eighth-graders, will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Feb. 2. The fee is $30. Participants will write creatively, work with West Tennessee Writing Project teachers and share with their friends. Themes will include: Monster Mysteries and Scary Suspense, Funky Fairy Tales, Crazy Creative Writing and Writing To, From and About Music. Every child receives a notebook and pen. Also, each child should provide his or her lunch or bring money to purchase pizza by the slice.
“Making Sense of the ACT” will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturdays, Feb. 2-23, with a class limit of 20 students. Instructor will be Ron Ramage, and the fee will be $50. This course will help students plan a strategy to make the highest score possible on this test. The course is designed for first-time test takers as well as seasoned veterans. Students will be using The Real ACT Prep Guide and should take the book to the first class meeting. The cost of the text is not included in the registration fee. The book may be purchased on the UT Martin campus at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore (881-7760).
“Private Beginning Horsemanship English/Western Riding Lessons” will be offered as individual sessions. Lessons will cover the fundamentals of horse safety and horsemanship to include handling, grooming, equipment, riding Western/English and the relationship of riding to physical and mental well-being. Instructors are Meghan Cunningham (hunt) and Brenna Burris (western), UT Martin women’s equestrian coaches. To schedule a lesson(s), contact Cunningham at 881-7273 or 881-7261. The fee is $35 for an hour lesson and a half-hour riding time. Participants should wear long pants and boots with heels. Riding helmets will be required and provided. No prior riding experience is necessary. Riders must be at least seven years of age to participate.
