Inside position — Lady Yellowjacket senior Taren Hatcher gets past her Peabody defender during Greenfield’s tough 45-43 road loss Tuesday night.
Special to The Press
In a game-long series of comebacks, the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets fell just short of the Peabody Lady Golden Tide, 45-43, Tuesday night in Trenton.
Alexi Hamm opened the scoring for Peabody with a turnaround jumper and a basket from Rakeshia Perry got the home team off to a 4-0 start. Katie McCall broke the Lady Golden Tide momentum, however, with a bucket and Jordan Galey completed a three-point play to give the Lady Yellowjackets a 5-4 lead. Perry followed Galey’s example with a three-point play of her own to regain the lead for Peabody, 7-5, but both Galey and Mallory Robinson connected from three land to give the visitors an 11-7 advantage. Taren Hatcher and Robinson continued the run and with two minutes left in the first quarter, Greenfield led 15-7. Robinson hit a three at the buzzer to give the Lady Yellowjackets a 20-11 lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Peabody mounted a comeback. Jasmine Latham completed a three-point play and Laquita Luten stole the ball in the backcourt and hit a layup to bring the Lady Golden Tide within four points, 22-18. Peabody continued to stay close and out-scored Greenfield 12-6 to trail by only three points at the half, 26-23.
In the third quarter, the Lady Golden Tide continued to control the momentum. Luten opened with a basket to bring Peabody within one, 26-25. A 3-pointer from Galey gave Greenfield the 29-25 lead, but Peabody scored to take back the lead. A Galey basket slowed the Tide run, but it would be the last basket of the quarter for Greenfield as the Lady Golden Tide took a 36-31 lead into the final frame.
A basket from Galey opened the fourth quarter and brought the Lady Yellowjackets within three points of the home team, 36-33, but Anthanique Burnett converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way to increase the Peabody advantage, 40-33. The Lady Yellowjackets continued to stay in the game, however, and Robinson hit a three to bring the visitors within five, 43-38, late in the quarter.
With the score 45-40, Galey stole an inbounds pass and scored the hoop plus the foul to make the score 45-43, but Peabody held on to win by that final score.
Perry and Burnett each had nine points for the Lady Golden Tide. Both Robinson and Galey led Greenfield with 15 points each.
The second contest started out very similarly to the first as the Yellowjackets used six points each from Reggie McHaney and Andrew Shane to take a 17-11 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Peabody’s Raphael Miller opened with a three-point play to make the score 17-14 and Robert Yancy followed with a layup to bring the Golden Tide within a single point, 17-16. With 5:41 left in the quarter, a pair of Yancy free throws put Peabody ahead and a Darius Norris three-point play increased the lead. The Golden Tide entered the bonus, but Shane scored four straight points for Greenfield to make the score 32-29 in favor of Peabody at the half.
The Golden Tide scored the first four points of the third frame, but Greenfield refused to give up and used a Cody Ricketts 3-pointer and a Shane layup to stay within six points, 40-34, with 3:42 left in the third quarter. It was back and forth with just two minutes left, but the Golden Tide used a four-point mini run to take a 49-43 lead at the end of three.
In the final frame, a pair of threes from Cody Ricketts and Derek Laster tied the score at 49, but Peabody took back the lead with Yancy free throws and a three-point play. The Golden Tide entered the bonus and was able to answer every Greenfield challenge with free throws to eventually take the 70-60 win.
Yancy led Peabody with 25 points. Shane scored 18 for the Yellowjackets.
