A second half comeback by the visitors prompted the need for an extra frame of play, but the host Dresden High School Lady Lions defeated the Union City Lady Golden Tornadoes in overtime, 51-43, Friday night in Dresden.
Union City began the scoring with a successful 3-point play, but the Lady Lions surged ahead on two Stefanie Riggs trifectas. Dresden used a 5-0 spurt to take an 18-6 lead at the end of one.
Micah Warford opened the second quarter with free throws. Riggs again connected from long distance, but the Lady Golden Tornadoes went 6-for-6 from the foul line to stay close. With 1:30 left in the first half, the Lady Lion lead was cut to six, but a 3-pointer from Riggs gave the home team a 28-19 halftime lead.
Though Dresden had the lead, Union City took over the momentum. Lady Lion Erica Glisson opened the third quarter at the line. She hit 1-of-2 attempts, but Marcetta Ross answered with a three to make the score 30-22. With just under a minute left in the third, the lead had been cut to five points, but a Marlee Mason jumpshot at the buzzer increased the DHS advantage by a deuce, 36-29.
In the fourth quarter, Meagan Pittman opened the scoring and increased the Dresden lead, 38-29. Union City’s Shenesha Huff caught fire, however, and cut the Dresden lead to five. A basket from Britney Mitchell cut the lead to three, 38-35, and another basket from Huff made the score 38-37. With both teams entering the bonus late in the quarter, Lacie Kelley stepped to the foul line with 2:23 left and sank two freebies to increase the Lady Lions’ slim lead, 40-37. Glisson was fouled and hit 1-of-2 free throws, but Huff nailed a trey at the other end of the court with 55 seconds left to shave the lead to one again, 41-40.
Huff stole the ball with 35.7 seconds left and was fouled, but missed the free throw. Mitchell snatched the offensive board and was fouled, but she also missed the front end of the one-and-one situation. With seven seconds left, UC’s Allison McCullough was fouled on a shot. She missed the first free throw, but hit the second to tie the contest at 41 and extend the battle into overtime.
In the extra session, Riggs opened with a 3-pointer. Mitchell answered with a basket to cut the DHS lead to one, but it would be the only bucket of the frame for the visitors and Dresden eventually took the 51-43 win. The Lady Lions won the first meeting between the two teams, 40-35, on Nov. 27.
Riggs led Dresden with 17 points including five 3-pointers. Kelley had 11. McCullough scored 12 for Union City.
In the second contest, the Golden Tornado depth in bench play and long-distance shooting proved to be too much for the Lions and the No. 1 team in the Class A polls — Union City — remained undefeated on the season, taking a 92-45 win over Dresden.
A trio of Golden Tornado players hit two 3-pointers each to give Union City a 30-15 lead at the end of one.
The Lions picked up the defensive pace in the second quarter. Though the home team was only out-scored 20-12 for the frame, the overall lead grew to 50-27 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Golden Tornadoes broke open the scoring, continuing to hit the long shots from behind the arc while holding the Lions to just 16 second-half points to take the 92-45 win. The win made it a season sweep for the Tornadoes as UC took the first meeting between the two teams, 79-4, in late November.
Four different Union City players — Andre Coby, M.J. Brown, Nik Brooks and Tony Wilkins — led the Golden Tornadoes with 13 points each. Tyson Wright had 10 for the Lions in the loss.
