Staff Sgt. Steven M. Tanner, U.S. Marine Corps, was recently awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “V” for Valor. Tanner was serving as an infantry platoon sergeant and personal security detachment commander, deployed to Ramadi, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
When Tanner’s vehicle was disabled by a rocket-propelled grenade, he immediately checked on all personnel and began to prepare the casualty for evacuation in a known enemy improvised explosive device area. Tanner’s rapid response under enemy threat and observation and saved the life of a fellow Marine.
Additionally, when his unit came under heavy machine gun and small arms fire while conducting a sweep, he led the assault into the enemy’s positions which inspired surrounding Marines and broke the enemy’s attack.
Tanner is married to the former Stephanie Lynn Rooks of Martin. He is the son of Patsy L. Mccaig of South Fulton and the late Steven “Spanky” Tanner of Paris.
