Both the Martin Middle School Lady Panthers and Panthers proved to be too much for Ridgemont as they went two for two in gaining victories Thursday night in Martin.
In the first contest, the Lady Panthers used a strong second half to take a 45-34 win, and in the second game, the Panthers used a 19-point first half performance from Will Thompson to defeat the Mustangs 54-28.
The Lady Mustangs opened what would be a slow first quarter on a 4-0 run and, though the Lady Panthers came back, Billie Dee Pruett hit a layup at the buzzer to give the visitors an 8-6 edge after one.
In the second quarter, with the score tied at 13, a Taylor Swaim layup followed by free throws gave Martin the 17-13 lead with just under two minutes left in the half. Free throws by Pruett brought the visitors closer, but Martin led after two quarters, 17-15.
In the third, Swaim pitched in 10 points to keep Martin in front, 32-25, heading into the fourth frame.
With Martin in the bonus in the final quarter, the Lady Panthers used free throws to seal the 45-34 victory.
Swaim led Martin with 23 points. Caitlin Campbell had 17. Paige Hicks had 16 for Ridgemont.
In the second game, Will Thompson’s 10 first-quarter points helped the home team to an 18-7 advantage after one.
The Mustangs attempted a comeback in the second quarter, but Martin out-scored the visitors 12-9 to take a 30-16 halftime lead.
Larry Powell opened the Martin scoring in the third quarter and with just over four minutes left in the frame, but Panther lead increased 36-16. At the end of three, the Martin advantage had grown to 54-28.
The visitors entered the bonus in the final quarter, but the damage had already been done and Martin took the 54-28 win.
Thompson led Martin with 19 points. Michael Hussey had seven for Ridgemont.
