UT Martin head baseball coach Bubba Cates will receive the American Baseball Coaches Association 25-year Coaching Award Saturday at the ABCA Convention in Philadelphia.
“This is a wonderful achievement; not only in terms of years and success, but also the fact that Cates has served hundreds of young people during that time and they are better because of his efforts,” said Dave Keilitz, executive director of the ABCA.
Cates enters his 10th year as the head coach at UT Martin. Cates has led the Skyhawks to two 20-win seasons since 1999 and more than 125 victories.
Before coming to UT Martin, Cates served as head coach at Jackson State Community College. He developed the Generals into a nationally ranked program. The 1996 team recorded a sixth-place finish in the Junior College World Series.
Prior to Jackson State, Cates was the head baseball coach at Kirby High School in Memphis.
Cates is a native of Cleveland, Miss., and played college baseball for former Boston Red Sox pitcher and legendary coach Dave “Boo” Ferris and the nationally ranked Delta State program.
Cates is married to the former Ann Simmons of Hammond, La., also a Delta State graduate. Cates and his wife Ann have three sons: Lin (20), Reid (15) and Cameron (11).
