Local pianist John Alston will be performing in his first program of the new year and his last local appearance for a while Sunday at 3 p.m. at Union City First United Methodist Church at 420 East Main St.
Alston, who appeared on “The Today Show” in November to focus attention on the annual Memphis St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Thanks and Giving program, will be leaving Union City Jan. 10 to enroll as a freshman at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Alston was a patient at St. Jude for several months and has appeared since then on television and at venues such as Disney World to call attention to the work of the hospital.
He is the son of Beverly Alston, owner of Bev’s Bistro on Jackson and First streets in Union City, and the late Bobby Alston, a Union City firefighter and associate pastor and gospel singer.
The public is invited to the piano concert. A love offering will be accepted for the talented young musician, who is also well-known to local residents from his work at the Obion County Public Library.
