Sharon Notables By: By Jacqueline D. Gardner wcp 1-3-08 Happy New Year! I hope that each of you had a wonderful New Year and that this year will be one of prosper for each of us. I know that God is blessing our small community with new people each day. I am anxious to get the list of newcomers for September through December! I bet we have had quite a few. I will give you an update on the number next week. Gary and Janice Page had a house full of visitors this week. Janice’s daughter and son-in law, Sarita and Stan Sutton, granddaughter Erin Reagan, son Keith Broadaway, and son and daughter-in-law, John and Stacy Broadaway and their children Elissa and John Paul were all here to visit with them. Janice was on a cloud this past week having all of her children and grandchildren there to visit. They celebrated Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 29, with a big meal and gift time. Their granddaughter Erin sang various Christmas carols for them and did a wonderful job. Now for those who have never heard this young lady sing, you are really missing something! She has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. She sang the classic Christmas carols and then sang some of her opera songs. God has really blessed her with a wonderful voice! Due to my surgery, I was not able to attend, but Jim and Taylor went and enjoyed the fellowship and singing, and I listened to her sing over the phone. It was great to be a part of the festivities even though I could not be there. Don and Carla Edwards had another New Year’s Eve party on Dec. 31. They had a lot of their friends and family in attendance. I hope that those who attended had a wonderful time. Again, my surgery kept me from going. I really missed seeing everyone and enjoying the food and fellowship. Perhaps I will be better next year! For a January calendar, call Shirley Chappell at 456-2213 and she can tell you what’s set up for the month at the Sharon Senior Center. The center has exercise equipment and games and is ready for us to enjoy! Mrs. Shirley provides rides to get groceries on Tuesday mornings around 10 a.m. You must call by Monday to be on the list and get a ride. The Sharon Dulcimers will resume their practices on Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sharon Senior Center. Practice is every Tuesday night unless otherwise posted. Be sure to mark your calendar for the first practice of the New Year! Did you remember to take your sports pictures to the Library? For those who do not know, during the month of January the Sharon Library will display pictures of individuals and groups participating in various sports. So if you have pictures of anyone in your family fishing, hunting, playing basketball, baseball, football or any other sport, please bring them to the Library. On Jan. 4 at 1:30, Kay Roberts Smith, a local author, and former Sharon resident, will present a program at the Sharon Public Library for the New Salem FCE Club. The public is invited to attend Mrs. Smith’s presentation on how quilts may have played a part in the escape of slaves on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Mrs. Smith will explain how escaping slaves might have used quilt designs, along with music and stories, to communicate among themselves and with others on the Underground Railroad. Be sure to mark your calendar and come out to hear this interesting information about our history. Basic computer classes for beginners will be offered at the Sharon Library from 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays for three weeks starting Feb. 6-22. Russell Cook, director of Adult Services at the C. E. Weldon Library, will teach the classes. Registration is necessary so call the Sharon Library at 456-2707 to sign up for classes. Remember that if you are looking for a meaningful way to honor a group or to commemorate a special occasion, a memorial book or monetary gift to the Sharon Library is a great way to do it. Donations and memorials are a primary source of new materials for the library. The library is very grateful to all those who remember them with a thoughtful gift. There is a lot of stuff happening during the month, so check my article for upcoming events or you can call Mrs. Peters at 456-2707 if you have questions about the library. Well, the kids are back at school! Remember to yield to all those walking in our town. It is crucial that you watch for the pedestrians and bicyclist so that no one is hurt in our town. Sometimes those bikes come out from nowhere, so really watch while you are driving through our town. Elise Wright has a birthday on Jan. 4. Kevin Burdette (my son) has a birthday on Jan. 5, and Harold and Rachel Tackett celebrate their anniversary also on Jan. 5. Kelly Fuqua has a birthday on Jan. 8. The Sharon Community wishes each one a very happy birthday and anniversary! I would love to complete my list, but I can’t do it without you. How about taking a moment to call me and add your family to my list? This would be a great way to start off the New Year! Please remember our most current way of saying that we support the military is by wearing red on Fridays. So don’t forget Red Fridays! I hope to see you in red every Friday until all our military are home! Well, for today, that is “all the news that is news” from the Sharon community. Remember to continue to pray for the military, your neighbors, and that God will have mercy on our land! None |
