Drew Chesteen of Union City and Nathan Brown of Rives were recently honored with scouting’s highest honor when they received the rank of Eagle Scout in an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony.
Both are members of Boy Scout Troop 55.
Chesteen, 19, is the son of Rick and Penny Chesteen of Union City. His grandparents are Jimmy and Shirley Permenter of Hawkins, Texas, and Richard and Gloria Chesteen of Union City.
He was in Cub Scout Pack 252, where he earned the Arrow of Light. In 1998, he bridged to Boy Scout Troop 55. He attended summer camp at Camp Mack Morris several times and participated in numerous troop activities, including campouts, camporees, backpacking, canoeing and spelunking trips.
The highlight of his scouting career was his 2003 trip to the National Boy Scout High Adventure Sea Base in Florida, where he and other scouts spent a week living on a sailboat in the Florida Keys.
Chesteen has been a patrol leader and a senior patrol leader with the troop. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow.
For his Eagle Project, Ches-teen designated handicap parking spaces at Graham Park. He worked with Union City Parks and Recreation director Ken Morris and they developed a plan to designate a total of 15 handicapped parking spaces throughout the park. Chesteen and a group of volunteers, consisting of 15 scouts and adult leaders, erected handicap parking signs and painted handicap parking spaces on the asphalt.
Chesteen graduated from Union City High School in May 2006. He played football for four years and was a saxophone player in the concert band. He was a member of several clubs and participated in Youth Leadership Obion County, where he took part in COPE.
Chesteen is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he is majoring in civil engineering. He also enjoys boating, fishing and golf.
Brown, 18, is the son of Tony and Amy Brown of Rives. His grandparents are Harold and Verna Murphy, Bob and Lois Brown and Ed and Donna Launder. He has a sister, Tabitha.
Brown joined Cub Scout Pack 155, where he earned the Arrow of Light. He bridged to Boy Scout Troop 55 in 2000. He has served as a patrol leader and senior patrol leader and is a member of the Order of the Arrow.
For his Eagle Project, Brown refurbished the park in Rives. With help from friends, family, fellow scouts and Woodland Mills First Baptist Church youth group members, he used 200 man hours on the project. A storm had damaged many areas of the town, including the park.
The workers hauled away downed trees, repaired and painted dugouts, painted all the playground equipment, painted the concession stand and hung new swings.
Brown graduated in May 2007 from Obion County Central High School, where he was in the top 10 percent of his class. He also served as president of the National Honor Society, president of the Student Council and was an officer in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was also voted Most Dependable and was a member of several other clubs.
He attends Woodland Mills First Baptist Church, where he has been very active in the youth group.
Brown is attending UT Martin this fall, majoring in pre-pharmacy.
