Nothing easy — Dresden’s Marlee Mason (right) pitched in 13 points and provided hustle in the Lady Lions’ fullcourt press to help lead her team to a dominating 64-35 win over Huntingdon in the Joe Denning Christmas Classic. | | Participating in the inaugural Joe Denning Christmas Classic at Bradford, the Dresden Lady Lions earned a pair of decisive wins, while the DHS boys split their pair of games. In two contests against the West Carroll War Eagles on Thursday, the Dresden Lions took a win and a loss. The Lady Lions took an early lead and handed the Lady War Eagles their first loss of the season, 54-39, and West Carroll used a strong fourth quarter to overcome a seven-point third frame deficit and took the win over the Lions, 84-74. West Carroll’s Ashley Powell opened the scoring with a trey, but Marlee Mason answered for Dresden with a layup. Both Erica Glisson and Stefanie Riggs tacked on trifectas and the Lady Lions led 13-7 after one. The Lady War Eagles came back in the second frame behind six points from Brittany Luther to cut the lead to three, 19-16. Riggs again connected for a trey and the Dresden advantage increased, 22-16, at the half. In the third quarter, Glisson opened with a bucket and Breanna Dubruiel made good on a three-point play. Luther kept her team close with two three-point plays, but WCHS trailed 33-25 going into the fourth. The Lady Lions took advantage of the free throw opportunities, going 15 for 17 from the stripe, for the 54-39 win. Riggs led Dresden with 16 points. Glisson had 12. Luther scored 16 for West Carroll. In the second contest, the Lions maintained a lead through three quarters, but were out-scored 33-16 in the final frame to drop the contest, 84-74. Dresden’s Matt McCulley caught fire and hit a trio of threes to open play. O’Brien Washington added six points and Dresden took a 21-16 lead. The War Eagles surged in the second frame. Behind 10 points from Thomas Greer, West Carroll picked up the pace, out-scoring the Lions 24-23, but trailed at the half, 44-40. In the third quarter, it was Tyson Wright’s turn to shine for the Lions. His 10 points helped cushion the Dresden lead, but a Greer 3-pointer at the buzzer proved to be the sign that the tables were about to be turned. Wright scored the first four points for Dresden in the fourth, but the War Eagles used two straight steals and free throws to take the lead, 63-62. With both teams in the bonus and West Carroll continuing to make big plays on defense, Greer connected on 15-of-18 free throws to cap off a 38-point effort and give West Carroll an 84-74 win. Wright’s 24 points led DHS.
