A local man was arrested for auto theft following an incident on Christmas Eve in Union City.
Zachrey Donyelle Winters, 22, of 624 North Third St., Union City, was charged with auto theft when he was arrested at 4:14 a.m. Monday, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The charge stems from a vehicle theft reported just before 4 a.m. by Stephanie A. McClendon of 229 Gibbs St., Union City. Ms. McClendon told police she had gone outside her home and started her 1996 Lincoln Continental so the windows could defrost, then went back inside her home and heard a noise outside. When she went out onto the front porch, she heard tires squealing just around the corner and noticed her car was gone, according to the report.
Police officers were checking the area for the vehicle when one officer reported he believed he had the car stopped in an alley in the North Third Street area. The officer was holding a suspect, identified as Winters, on the ground at gunpoint in a backyard in the 600 block of North Third Street. Officers recognized the car from a description the victim had provided just minutes earlier, police reported.
