Reading Railroad a success with help of media
To the Editor:
The Weakley County Reading Railroad would like to thank the Weakley County Press for their continued support in helping every child 0-5 years receive free books.
The newspaper has given a lot of time and publicity to this great foundation, Books from Birth, started by Gov. Phil Bredesen, for all children in Tennessee.
The entire staff and Sabrina, who especially has been supportive in our ideas as well as our events and stories, have helped the dreams of Tennessee’s children to have free books which supports a child’s promise of a great future through literacy.
The Weakley County Reading Railroad Advisory Board would also like to thank WCMT radio for their contributions.
Chris Brinkley and Paul Tinkle have supported the Imagination Library since it started. They have been instrumental in letting the Weakley County listeners of WCMT know how everyone can help.
Mr. Brinkley was the recipient of an award this past year from the Weakley County Reading Railroad Program for his dedication to the program.
A few years ago, when the State of Tennessee and Gov. Bredesen teamed up with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library so that all children, ages birth-5, could have their own set of 60 books free at no charge, Weakley County took on the responsibility to make sure that could happen.
Just think, a book mailed to your child each month for 5 years.
The challenge for Weakley County was to sign up all the children who were eligible and then match the cost.
With the help of volunteers, the Weakley County Press and WCMT radio, the Weakley County Reading Railroad has been successful in recruiting children as well as raising match funds.
Hats off to our media! Keep up the great work you have provided for the children of Weakley County.
