Winston Frederick Tipton, 89, of Nashville died at Cypress Court Assisted Living Facility in Atlanta. He was a former resident of Union City and Tiptonville.
Services will be at Tiptonville First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. John Archer officiating. Burial will follow in Tiptonville City Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church Sunday from 5-8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Travis Tipton, Winston F. Tipton III, Hughes Tipton, Ed Sumara, Jack Haynes and Perry Butler.
The family requests that memorials be made to Tiptonville or Union City First United Methodist churches.
White-Ranson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born June 9, 1918, in Tiptonville, son of the late Reuben Rider and Ardie (Wynn) Tipton. He married the former Margaret Luten June 8, 1951. She died July 31, 1985. He then married the former Martha Carpenter. She survives.
He attended high school in Tiptonville and graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga. He was also a 1940 graduate of Vanderbilt University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in China, Burma and India, and was a landowner and farmer. He had owned the former Massey-Ferguson dealership in Tiptonville, the former Tiptonville Grain Co. and the former Reelfoot Alfalfa Mill in Tiptonville. A member of Tiptonville First United Methodist Church, he had served on the board of trustees and had attended Union City First United Methodist Church for some time. He was also active in the Republican Party and the Vanderbilt Alumni Club and was a former member of Tiptonville Lions Club.
He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Waymon R. and Jencie Tipton of Nashville; his daughter and son-in-law, Helen and William Ware Bush of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Winston F. Tipton III, Hughes Tipton, Margaret M. Tipton and Travis W. Tipton, all of Nashville; and his sister-in-law, Mrs. R.R. (Mary) Tipton of Tiptonville.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Winston F. Tipton Jr.; two sisters, Tennessee (Tipton) Butler and Louise (Tipton) Sullivan; and his brother, Reuben Rider Tipton Jr.
