Cougars notch 1st triumph; Devilettes remain perfect | | | Hillcrest brought out the brooms for the first time during the 2007 jayvee basketball season. And in the midst of the sweep, the Cougars got their first taste of victory — a 49-37 triumph over Black Oak. Meanwhile, the H’crest girls coasted to a 34-26 win in the evening’s opener. In the nightcap, the Cougars built a 20-1 lead after one frame to distance themselves from the Eagles, still winless through five games. Hillcrest led 29-15 at halftime and 39-18 at the end of three periods in the triumph. In other JV action Monday night, Union City lost both ends of a twinbill to Humboldt with a 26-20 loss in girls’ action and a 44-32 loss in boys’ play, and South Fulton took a pair from county rival Lake Road — with the girls remaining undefeated after a 39-34 winner and the boys on the right side of a 34-20 final. H’crest sweeps BO Chandler Fussell powered the offensively-charged Cougars (1-3) with 18 markers, while teammate Bryan Morris also reached double digits with a 15-point outing. For the Eagles (0-5), Blake Rudd led the way with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. Austin Choate made his presence known under the basket with 12 boards in the loss. In the girls’ game, Hillcrest held a comfortable 23-9 advantage at intermission en route to improving its overall record to 3-1. Kelsey Gibson tallied a team-high 13 points for the Lady Cougars. For Black Oak (0-5), Chelsie Pitts posted a double-double with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Darcey Jones contributed six points and Ashlynn Hamm pulled down seven rebounds. Both schools return to action on their respective home courts Thursday night. H’crest hosts Lake Road Thursday night with Black Oak welcoming “York Hill” — the combined efforts of Yorkville and Spring Hill. SF defeats LR on road Lake Road led after every quarter but the one that counted. The Lady Generals held a 16-3 advantage after one and an 18-13 lead at intermission. LR extended its lead to seven points after the third quarter before a 19-7 fourth quarter tipped the scales in South Fulton’s favor. The Devilettes (4-0) were led by Talaeah Cross (10 points), with both Lakin Hailey and Marina Barclay adding seven markers. The Lady Generals (2-1) were paced by a pair of players with double digits. Whittney Dodd led the scoring chart with 13 points in the defeat, with Macy Wright tacking on 10 markers for LR. Laura Beth Shelton finished the outing with eight points and six rebounds. In the nightcap, the game was in a 12-12 deadlock at intermission. South Fulton (3-1) bettered LR 11-1 in the third to distance itself and procure the victory. Montre Lewis led the way for the Red Devils with seven points and 12 caroms, with Khiry Lewis adding an additional seven. Kendall Greer and Jacquay Garmon each contributed a half-dozen for SF. Trey Phipps and Parker McMinn each scored six for Lake Road (1-2), with Austin Carter contributing four points, four rebounds and three steals to the losing effort. South Fulton hosts Union City tonight, while Lake Road returns to action Thursday at Hillcrest. UC drops pair to Vikes The Lady Twisters held an 11-9 advantage at halftime, but the lead was not safe with Humboldt coming back for the six-point victory. Sadie Hollis paced Union City (1-2) with seven points with Mykeya Brown adding six. In the boys’ loss, Shyheim Slayton led the Twisters (0-3) with nine points. UC teammate Travis Rutledge brought down 14 rebounds during the defeat. In “B” team action, Alex Darnell and Lamont Dickerson each scored eight points to power the Tornadoes to a 39-34 victory.
