Veterans Day events slated

A parade in Union City and a coffee call at Obion Community Center are among the activities scheduled locally in observance of Veterans Day 2007.
Pamela Hutcheson of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4862 Ladies Auxiliary has organized a Saturday parade. Vehicles will line up at 10 a.m. on the parking lot of the former Moore Fruit Market on South First Street in Union City.
The Town of Obion has two major events waiting in the wings.
“I have asked all our churches to observe a moment of silence at 11 o’clock Sunday morning (Veterans Day),” said Obion Mayor Patsy Barker.
An informal coffee-and-donut social will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Obion Community Center, according to former mayor Glenn Parnell.
“We are asking veterans and their families to attend, share their stories. It’s Veterans Day and a time to stop and thank them for what they’ve done for our country,” he said. “We don’t want to forget those who are serving now, either. It’s for them as well.”
Also at Obion, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, a contingent of young people under the guidance of Sunday school teacher Judy Hale will present a patriotic play at New Faith Church. Ms. Hale said the performance will be the third one for the 14 boys and girls, ages 10 to 18.
“It’s going to be awesome. We first presented it last year and we’ve added more to it, more scenery, more songs,” she said. “The theme is strictly for the military. We want to honor them and thank them for what their service.
“We invite the public to attend and join us in honoring our military forces.”
Other than Union City and Obion, none of the several municipalities in Obion County have Veterans Day activities scheduled.
In the private business sector, Charlie T’s Restaurant in Union City will offer a free pancake and coffee to all veterans 5 a.m.-noon Saturday. “My father, the late Charlie Tarkington, was a Korean War veteran,” said co-owner Tammy Biggers. “We do this every year to honor veterans.”
