Bogan load too big for Devils
Jarvis Bogan was a one-man wrecking crew with three touchdowns and over 300 total yards in Lake County’s 42-26 victory over South Fulton Friday in Region 7-1A play.
Bogan rushed for 175 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns on the ground and one kickoff return for 85 yards to paydirt. He also caught four passes for 58 yards in the LC triumph.
The loss was the seventh straight for SF since the Red Devils opened the season with a victory over Ballard Memorial. South Fulton is now 0-5 in league play.
Nonetheless, the Redmen matched their season-high point total and accounted for the second best yardage output of the season.
Hunter Harris threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns — both to Corbin Hawks. Hawks and Holden McConnell had four catches apiece for SF.
Bogan, though, and his Falcon teammates were quick out of the gate with the bruising fullback capping a four play, 61-yard drive with a 13-yard scamper to paydirt with 5:34 remaining in the first.
Seth Hinson booted the point after attempt to put LC up 7-0.
Just under three minutes later, Dominic Kimbel sprinted 80 yards on a punt return to give the Falcons a 13-0 lead after Hinson’s kick was no good.
Early in the third, Bogan plunged in for Lake County’s third score from three yards out to give his team a 21-0 lead after he caught Hinson’s two-point toss.
South Fulton took advantage of good field position after the Falcons booted the ensuing kickoff out of bounds.
With a pass interference penalty also assisting the Red Devils, Harris took control. The junior signal caller found Hawks on a pair of slant passes — one for a 16-yard gain to move near the red zone and the other a 28-yard catch that ended in the end zone for the locals’ first score.
Armando Gonzalez’s PAT attempt was blocked as SF trailed 21-6 at halftime.
Lake County (5-3, 3-2 in Region 7-1A) added to its advantage early in the second half.
With 8:45 remaining in the third, Darrell Avery capped a eight-play, 80-yard march with a 12-yard carry across the plane of the goal line to put the Falcons up 28-6 after a Hinson kick.
Four minutes later, South Fulton responded with Jonathan Avent finishing off an eight-play, 59-yard march with a one-yard plunge into the end zone. Gonzalez’s kick was again no good with the Redmen trailing 28-12.
LC tacked on another score later in the third quarter. Trevor Blythe broke free and 39 yards later the play was whistled to a halt with the Falcons celebrating the team’s fifth TD.
South Fulton pulled to within eight points after a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Hawks hauled in a 27-yard pass from Harris with 9:10 left in the final period for a touchdown. Meanwhile, Gonzalez got to paydirt from 16 yards out with 5:22 remaining.
SF elected to kick it deep and Bogan made the locals pay by reeling off an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that cemented the win for Lake County.
Defensively, McConnell and George Garmon each made eight takedowns for South Fulton with Codie Rogers contributing six stops to the losing effort.
The Red Devils take to the road this Friday with a trip to Gleason. Meanwhile, Lake County travels to McKenzie.
