UTM rifle team sees Northern Lights, shoots against No. 1 team in nation
The UT Martin rifle team was able to enjoy snow in October, visit the Denali National Park and see the Northern Lights. The team was also able to compete against the No. 1 rifle team in the country – Alaska Fairbanks.
The UT Martin teams, both the mixed and the women’s, shot back-to-back matches against the host team.
Alaska won the first match with an aggregate score of 4,669 (2,349 in air rifle and 2,320 in smallbore). The UT Martin mixed team posted a combined score of 4,426 (2,235 in air rifle and 2,191 in smallbore). The UT Martin women’s team shot a total of 4,363 (2,203 in air rifle and 2,160 in smallbore).
Heather Tillson led the UT Martin mixed team with a 579 in air rifle, while newcomer Nick Combs fired a 568.
Kellie Zurowski led the women’s team in air rifle with a 579.
Tillson also led the mixed team with a 563 in smallbore, while Rob Burrows and Nick Combs each fired a 562.

“This was the first time the UT Martin teams have fired on electronic targets,” said Bob Beard, the veteran head coach. “Heather (Tillson) and Kellie (Zurowski) continue to shoot excellent scores.”
Alaska’s blue and gold teams won the second day with an aggregate score of 4,625 each. The UT Martin mixed team shot 4,428 the second day, while the women’s team fired 4,398.
Tillson led the mixed team again in air rifle with a 579, while Nick Combs fired a season-high 573.
On the women’s side, Zurowski led all UT Martin shooters in air rifle with a 583. Kaitlin Chaffin recorded a personal-best 561 in air rifle.
Tillson and Zurowski matched each other in smallbore. Both shooters fired 573. Chaffin fired a personal best 543 in smallbore. Her score was nine points higher than she shot the day before.
