The 85 player field is made up of 16 teams from 14 different universities and six participants competing as individuals. The par 72 Paris Landing Golf Course is playing at 6,685 yards.
Lents opened his round with a par on the first hole, before finding trouble on the 383-yard, par-4 No. 2. He recovered on Nos. 5 and 6, recording back-to-back birdies, moving to 1-under-par on the front side. Lents again recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 to move into the lead at 3-under-par. He had an opportunity to reach 4-under-par, but a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 18 stopped just short of falling in the cup.
Cole Floyd, who is coming off medalist honors in his last tournament, was one of three Skyhawks to record 3-over-par 75s. Joining Floyd at 3-over-par were John Slayton and Jon Martin. Sam Hinson carded a 5-over-par 77 to round out the first round scoring for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin’s second team in the Skyhawk Invitational, called the “Orange Team,” recorded a 30-over-par 318. Bailey Childress led the Orange Team with a 5-over-par 77. Christopher Belote added a 7-over-par 77, to go along with Jake Joyner’s 8-over-par 80 and Chase Grissom’s 10-over-par 82.
“We played well in the first round, but the wind made it tough,” said Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter. “If we had putted better in the first round, we would be leading tournament right now. Keeping the ball in play on this course is key and so far we have done a good job of that.”
