Shiloh National Military Park will host two owl prowls the third week in October. The evening program, set for Oct. 19 and 20, is a car caravan driving tour to selected park locations. Those participating will have the chance to listen to and interpret the unique calls made by night birds such as owls and nightjars.
The two-hour programs will begin at 6 and will include an introduction to a live owl. Participants are encouraged to wear footwear suitable for the walks and are urged to dress appropriately for the weather. Rain or inclement weather will be cause for canceling the activity.
Tours begin from the Shiloh Battlefield Visitor Center and those taking part are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the program.
There is no fee. Contact ranger Marcus Johnson at (731) 689-5696 or at Marcus_Johnson@nps.gov to sign up.
Shiloh will also sponsor an auto tour through the park to interpret the colorful display of autumn leaves in the battlefield. There will be selected stops and brief walks to study why colors express themselves differently in various locations and to observe what colors are representative of specific types of trees.
The caravan tour will be conducted Oct. 29-Nov. 2, with two programs daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The tours will last an hour. Tickets to the park are $3 each or $5 per family, with those 15 years old and younger admitted free to the park.
Participants must use their own cars for the tours and are encouraged to bring water, footwear suitable for brief walks and cameras and to wear appropriate dress for the weather.
Rain will not necessarily be cause for cancellation, but extreme or severe weather conditions could delay or postpone activities.
Those interested may contact Johnson to register.
