UTM volleyball returns home after tough loss
The UT Martin volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Skyhawk Fieldhouse Tuesday night to host Eastern Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference action. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
Despite a dominating game two victory at Austin Peay Friday night, the Skyhawks dropped the OVC tilt 3-1 (26-30, 30-17, 25-30, 28-30) to fall to 7-9 overall and 1-5 in the OVC standings.
The Skyhawks had three players post double-doubles. Senior Kathryn Sprague led the way with 16 kills and 11 blocks, while freshman Emily Steinbeck had 45 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Lauren Montague had 12 kills and 12 digs.
As a team, the Skyhawks hit .276 and piled up 24 blocks.
“Statistically we are sound, but errors are proving to be costly,” said Amy Draper, the Skyhawks’ third-year head coach. “It’s the timing of the errors that hurt us the most. When we make errors it shifts the momentum.”
UT Martin opened the match’s second game with four consecutive points. However, it was the Skyhawks’ 15-2 scoring run at game’s end that proved to be the difference in a 30-17 victory.
After Tuesday’s home match against Eastern Illinois, the Skyhawks will travel to Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech Friday and Saturday
