UT Martin soccer returns to winning ways with shutout
JONESBORO, Ark. — The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s soccer team downed Arkansas State Friday afternoon at Indian Soccer Park 2-0 after goals from Sophie Cox and Jody Kiers. With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 4-3-0 on the year while Arkansas State drops to 2-4-0.
The Skyhawks, like they have done many times this season already, netted an early goal to set the tempo for the match. Kendall Straessle, in the 11th minute, found the ball deep in the Lady Indians’ zone where she found Cox on a crossing pass that Cox was able to slip into the top right corner of the goal past the Arkansas State goalkeeper, Brielan Smiechowski.
After carrying that 1-0 lead into the halftime break, the Skyhawks continued to add offensive pressure in the second half. UT Martin added an insurance goal in the 86th minute when Jamie Furstenberg dribbled the ball into the box to draw Smiechowski out before finding Kiers who was able to easily chip the ball into the back of the net.
“We played well in the first half and in parts of the second half this afternoon, but we are still looking to put together a complete game,” said Tennessee-Martin head coach Craig Roberts. “Offensively I was very happy with our performance and I’m glad to see the amount of distribution we have in the goal scorers this year.”
After taking on Lambuth University on Monday in Jackson in their final non-conference action of the season, the Skyhawks will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face Samford on Friday night. Action will begin at 7 p.m.
