G’field creates points from War Eagle turnovers
The Greenfield Yellowjackets took advantage of five West Carroll War Eagle turnovers and their own dominating rushing attack to post their third consecutive victory, 36-7.
The win pushed Greenfield above .500 for the first time since the Jackets were 5-4 after Week 9 of the 2004 season. Currently, the Jackets enjoy a 3-2 overall mark and are 2-0 in Region 7-A. West Carroll drops to 1-3 and 1-1 in the region.
It was initially the West Carroll offense that repeatedly moved the chains, but a pass over the middle by War Eagle quarterback Trent Gateley intended for Josh Meals was stripped away by GHS senior Brett Perkins.
Thanks to a solid return by Perkins, Greenfield began its first drive near midfield. The Jackets used runs by Perking and classmate Colin Medling to move deep into WC territory. From the 16-yard line, Medling fired a pass into the arms of Daniel Ricketts in the end zone. Chase McMullen ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 GHS lead with 5:02 to play in the first quarter.
The Greenfield defense did its job again, forcing a punt.
Following the TD pass, the Jackets went back to the ground game. Perking obliged with three consecutive runs, the last of them a weaving 34-yard sweep to paydirt that saw War Eagle defenders left in his wake. The two-point try was stopped to leave Greenfield’s lead at 14-0 with 1:50 left in the first frame.
Another West Carroll turnover created an opportunity for the host Yellowjackets. Sophomore Jonathan Benson came up with a fumble recovery for Greenfield near midfield.
Again the Jackets completed the short march to the end zone. The Greenfield offensive line continued to push back the West Carroll defenders to provide running room. Perkins punished the War Eagles at the goal line to complete the drive with a 4-yard scoring rumble. Greenfield went back to the red-hot Perkins on a sweep to the right for the two-point conversion and a 22-0 advantage with 6:16 to play in the second quarter.
West Carroll refused to give up and began a productive drive that pushed deep into Greenfield territory. Once again, the turnover bug was on hand in the guise of a Yellowjacket uniform. Medling intercepted a pass in the end zone to keep West Carroll off the scoreboard and preserve the GHS 22-0 advantage.
That score stood as the teams came out of the locker rooms to begin the third quarter.
West Carroll finally returned the turnover favor as Gateley picked off a Medling aerial to give the War Eagles possession at their own 25.
The War Eagles couldn’t move the chains and fumbled the snap on 4th-and-1 at their own 34. Sophomore Brodie Cogburn fell on the football for the Yellowjackets.
On the second GHS snap, Perkins raced around the right end for a 21-yard touchdown run. A run up the gut by Medling added the two-pointer to extend the Greenfield lead to 30-0 with 6:18 left in the third quarter.
West Carroll once again put together a steady march up the gridiron, using nearly 6 minutes to cover 75 yards in 13 plays. The War Eagles’ lone scoring drive of the night ended with a 38-yard sweep by Cody Nelson. Andras Korcsog’s kick cut the Greenfield lead to 23 points, 30-7, with 29 ticks left on the clock in the third frame.
The lone touchdown of the fourth quarter came courtesy of a Medling 12-yard run around the end to the pylon. The two-point try was stopped, leaving the game’s final score at 36-7 in Greenfield’s win.
The Yellowjackets will take a week off before visiting South Fulton, while West Carroll hosts Gibson County on Friday night.
