It was almost all good news in Woodland Mills Monday night.
Mayor Wade Carrington told the board he has spoken with Bryan Barker of Barker Brothers and Republic Services about the city’s refuse and recycling program and learned things are “working smoothly.”
He said Barker informed him that of all the cities the company has on the single stream recycling program in this region, Woodland Mills’ is the cleanest.
Carrington said he was told the poundage has been good and the residents are doing good about getting the correct containers curbside each week.
“It seems to be pretty successful at this time,” he said.
The mayor and board also received a good report from its auditing firm Thompson and McConnell. Johnny McConnell was on hand to present the good news.
According to the audit, the city has seen an increase overall in net assets of $22,392. That is up from an $18,728 increase in 2011.
“You’re having standard consistent growth. You have a solid financial position,” McConnell said, adding the city is “well insured” when considering collateral at the bank.
The only finding noted was that the city charter requires the city clerk to be bonded, but she is not. Thompson and McConnell suggested both the clerk and the mayor be bonded. Carrington said the city has purchased the minimum required by the charter for the clerk, since being not fied.
“Y’all have done a good job,” McConnell added.
After the meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Carring-ton and prayer by alderman Tom Menees, the board:
• Learned the following property taxes had been collected — $122 for 2009, with $62.22 in penalties; $122 for 2010, with $32.94 in penalties; $128 for 2011, with $19.20 in penalties; and $8,310 for 2012.
Property taxes remaining unpaid as of Dec. 31, 2012, were $45 from 2009, $297 from 2010, $772 from 2011 and $13,590 from 2012. Charter Communications owes $15 in public utilities taxes from 2009.
• Approved financial reports for December, including total assets of $7,491.50 in the refuse collection fund, $8,073.18 in the street aid fund, $586,928.74 in the sewer fund and $67,015.46 in the general fund.
• Was informed the mayor has not heard from the city’s attorney regarding legal action concerning the Jordan property.
• Heard there had been a report of two manhole covers which were gushing with water during the recent rains.
• Discussed the need to replace a motor and impeller and possibly the meter at one of the lift stations. It was noted this is something which should be done in the summer.
• Accepted the resignations of Ed Moreland and Taunda Bellamy from the city’s zoning committee.
• Learned TML meets on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
• Reminded residents the next meeting will be Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.
• Heard city recorder Thelma Green will graduate from her certification classes on Feb. 22.
