Lady Chargers step up to 3rd spot in AA poll

One step closer.
Westview’s girls moved up a notch in the latest Associated Press Class AA girls’ state basketball poll, checking in at No. 3 with 143 points.
The Lady Chargers, who improved to 18-2 overall and 10-0 in District 13AA with wins over Crockett County and Ripley last week, are now just six points behind Livingston Academy (18-4).
Grainger, unbeaten through 20 games, moved up from second to first in this week’s poll, receiving all 19 first-place votes.
Cannon County fell out of the top spot down to No. 4, while McMinn Central and Knoxville Fulton held firm at the fifth and sixth spots, respectively.
Covington, now 18-2, is all alone in seventh place after sharing the spot last week, giving 13AA two teams in the poll. Elizabethton, Creek Wood and defending state champion Christ Presbyterian Academy round out the final three spots in the poll.
Obion County Central fell out of the Top 10.
Westview will look to keep moving up this week with two more league games — tonight at Dyersburg and then Friday at home against Haywood.
Rural West Tennessee has a pair of teams in the Class 1A rankings with Union City, the only team to beat Westview this year, taking the No. 1 spot for the first time in the long and mostly forgettable history of the girls’ program and Lake County checking in at No. 10.
Union City and Lake County square off tonight at Tiptonville.
In the boys’ polls, Dyer County is ranked sixth in Class AAA, Jackson South Side is second and Covington is fifth in 2A, and Union City held its No. 10 ranking in single-A.
This week’s rankings saw half of the polls get new No. 1 teams.
In addition to Union City in the girls’ 1A poll and Grainger in 2A, Columbia Academy is now the top-rated team in the boys’ single-A list while Briarcrest is now No. 1 in the boys’ Division II poll.
Staying put at No. 1 in the season’s second polls are Southwind in boys’ AAA, CPA in boys double-A, Riverside in girls’ 3A and Ensworth in girls’ Division II.
In all, 12 schools are listed in both the girls’ and boys’ ranking.
The polls also feature four undefeated teams, while Science Hill — third in the boys’ 3A poll — checks in with the most overall wins at 21.
