South Fulton Elementary School PTO dissolved
By CHRIS MENEES
Staff Reporter
South Fulton Elementary School’s Parent-Teacher Organization has been dissolved amid apparent issues with procedures and accountability.
PTO members voted to dissolve the organization at a special called meeting last week and recognition of that action is included on the agenda for tonight’s Obion County School Board meeting, set for 7 at Ridgemont Elementary.
There allegedly were accusations that some members were misusing funds and The Messenger has received unconfirmed reports the state comptroller’s office is auditing the PTO’s records to see if those claims are true. However, a state comptroller’s office spokesman said today he cannot confirm whether an audit is under way and said any findings from audits are released in reports only once investigations are complete.
School PTOs are not affiliated with the Obion County School System, but the school board annually recognizes school support organizations that are materially compliant with state law and board policies.
At tonight’s school board meeting, Obion County Director of Schools David Huss will recommend that the board recognize the dissolution of the South Fulton PTO and remove the organization from the district’s website. Since the organization is no longer active, no fundraising activities will be allowed to take place.
Huss noted on tonight’s agenda item that there appears to be “issues with procedures and accountability” and he reported, based on last week’s called PTO meeting, it appears the state comptroller’s office has been contacted.
The director was attending a meeting outside the board office today and could not be reached for comment but is expected to be at tonight’s regular monthly school board meeting.
