Man knifed, airlifted; 1 arrested
By CHRIS MENEES
Staff Reporter
One man was seriously injured and another charged following a fight Wednesday evening in north Union City.
Manuel Robert Mendez, 21, of 602 North Fifth St., Union City, sustained a severe laceration in a disturbance that occurred about 7:25 p.m. at 501 North First St., Union City police reported.
He was airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Joel Michael Emerson, 20, of 616 North Third St., Union City, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident, according to a Union City Police Department report.
He was being held at the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex at press time today, with his arraignment scheduled for 1 p.m.
Police were notified Wednesday evening of a disturbance at the North First Street residence and officers arrived to find Mendez had been slashed across his abdomen with a knife — causing “serious bodily injury” — during a fight between him and Emerson, according to the police report.
Due to the severity of Mendez’s injuries, he was transported by air to the southeast Missouri hospital for treatment.
In the report, police said Emerson admitted to being involved in the fight with Mendez and also to using a knife against him during the fight. He was arrested on the assault charge at 7:41 p.m. at the North First Street residence where the alleged incident occurred.
Union City Police Chief Perry Barfield said this morning the incident remains under investigation by the police department’s criminal investigations division.
