Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
30 Years Ago
Nov. 5 — The Union City Middle School basketball teams opened their season by sweeping Woodland Mills. The Lady Tornadoes rallied from six down in the fourth quarter to claim a 28-23 triumph as Barbara Talley scored 10 points and Missy Edgin nine. Woodland’s Laurie Garrigan led all scorers with 13 markers. In the nightcap, Tremelle McFall scored 16 and Doug Martinek 12 in UC’s 51-31 triumph. Jimmy Craig poured in a game-high 21 points for WM to pace all players.
Nov. 6 — Civitan Bowl-bound Union City bounced back from a disappointing loss with a 25-0 shutout of Munford. The 7-3 Twisters, who were to be paired against 8-2 SBEC of Memphis in the 12th annual local bowl game, got two touchdown runs and a scoring pass from Aaron Dearmitt to roll to a victory in their regular season finale. Marcus Allen was on the receiving end of Dearmitt’s TD toss. South Fulton closed its season with a win, surprising Dresden 28-6 to finish at .500 (5-5). Scott Thomas was a head-hunter on defense for the Redmen, who got 122 yards rushing from Patrick Hobbs, a scoring toss from Neal Covington and an 85-yard punt return from Harold Hutcherson.

Nov. 2 — Fifth-ranked Union City improved to 9-0 and just one more victory from the first-ever unbeaten and untied season in school history with a 32-0 whitewash of Westview. Fullback Keith Radde rushed for 90 yards and three touchdowns and Matt Smith racked up 12 solo tackles and 16 in all for the Tornadoes, who locked up back-to-back district championships. Obion Central assured itself of no worse than a break-even finish by winning for the fifth time in nine games with a 46-6 blowout of Gibson County. Scott Webb went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season with a 232-yard, three touchdown effort on just 12 carries. Mike Terry had a TD and four two-point conversions for the victorious Rebels.
Nov. 6 — The Black Oak girls and Ridgemont boys were winners in a middle school hoops twinbill. Blake Knipper had eight points and both Tina Mitchell and Gina Cochran six apiece in BO’s 30-15 triumph. Julian Robinson broke out with 23 points in a 59-33 victory for the Mustangs with teammate Joseph Johnson contributing 17 points. Chaney Petty scored 11 for Black Oak.

Nov. 1 — UT Martin head football coach Sam McCorkle was fired by university Athletics Director Phil Dane — effectively immediately. Dane cited “philosophical differences” for the move but insisted the move was “not personal” and that there had been “no NCAA violations.” The perennially-losing Skyhawk program had gone 5-25 during McCorkle’s nearly three-year tenure, failing to win any of 16 Ohio Valley Conference games. Defensive line coach Johnny Jernigan was named interim coach to finish out the season.
Nov. 4 — The Obion County Central girls’ cross country team recorded a best-ever third place finish in the state meet in Nashville. Jill Konkol was the state runnerup in individual competition and the Lady Rebels trailed only David Lipscomb and Sullivan Central in the final standings. Other members of the OC team Sarah Konkol, Becky McEwen, Annah McEwen, Betsy Burkett, Hailey Woodward and Katelyn Huey.
Nov. 4 — Obion Central matched its best regular season win total with a 47-21 blowout of Brighton. Wes Moore had a hand in all seven Rebel touchdowns, running for three and throwing for four. Kyle Ross was on the receiving end of eight Moore aerials for 96 yards and a TD. OC was headed into the playoffs, where it was scheduled to host Kingsbury in Round 1 of the postseason.

Nov. 5 — Gleason shocked the West Tennessee football landscape by soundly beating Union City for the first time ever on the gridiron 36-21. GHS, the smallest football-playing school in the state, dominated the tradition-rich Tornado program in all facets of the contest, rolling up 472 yards to UC’s 284. Alex Verdell bulldozed his way through the Twister defense for 232 yards. Brett White threw two TD passes for Union City, while Taylor Bruff caught seven balls for 87 yards and a score. Having placed fourth in the district, UC was headed to TCA for the playoffs.

Nov. 7 — Union City’s Daniel Williamson skyrocketed up the leaderboard, finishing 11th overall after placing 95th the year before in the state cross country meet in Nashville. The Obion Central girls placed seventh as a team — a three-spot improvement over the previous year — paced by freshman Rachel Jones and Peyton Daniel. The Rebel boys were 16th in the team standings, with Drake Campbell leading the way.
Nov. 7 — Obion Central won just its second-ever state playoff game in football with a 46-22 thumping of Fairley in Memphis. LaDevin Fair ran for 232 yards for the sixth-ranked Rebels, who improved to 9-2 and earned a rematch with Covington — one of the two teams to defeat the county locals in the regular season — in second round play.
