Week 10 loss knocks Dresden from Class 2A top spot

Posted: Wednesday, October 31, 2012 12:00 pm

Dresden’s one loss cost the Lions their No. 1 rank.
The final Associated Press high school football poll of the 2012 season has Dresden ranked fifth following its 38-7 setback to Huntingdon in their District 14A game showdown on Friday at the Mustangs’ Paul Ward Stadium.
Dresden’s loss did not cost the team in the 2A state playoffs, though, as the Lions are the top seed in Quad 4 and will play the winner of this week’s Trinity Christian-Booker T. Washington game Nov. 9 at home.
Grace Christian took the final No. 1 ranking of the season, moving up one spot, while Boyd Buchanan stepped up to No. 2 and defending state champion Friendship Christian slid up a notch to No. 3.
Adamsville, which lost to Dresden in the semifinals last season, is now ranked fourth.
Just behind Dresden are Oneida, Hampton and Silverdale Baptist Academy.
All of the top eight teams sport a 9-1 record.
Trenton (7-3) continued its surge into the poll, moving up one spot to the No. 9 spot, while Westwood is the 10th-ranked team.
Huntgindon’s win over last week’s top team in 2A earned the Mustangs a move up of one spot in the 1A poll, now fourth with an 8-2 record.
The Ponies will host Lake County in the first round of the playoffs, the winner then traveling to Union City (7-3), which moved up to No. 9 with a win over Humboldt this past weekend.
The 1A poll also includes West Carroll (8-2), which checks in at No. 6.
Class 2A was the only place where the top ranking changed hands. Maryville remains atop the 6A poll, Beech finished the year atop the 5A poll, Giles County is first in 4A, Alcoa is first in 3A, Gordsonville held on to that spot in 1A and Ensworth is first in Division II.
Covington and Jackson Northside closed the year ranked highest among rural West Tennessee entries with the No. 2 spot in 4A and 5A, respectively.
Henry County stayed fifth in 5A, while Lexington moved up to No. 4 and Dyersburg stood pat at No. 8 in the 4A poll.
South Gibson capped a perfect 10-0 season as the No. 5 team in 3A, while Milan held on to the eighth spot.
University School of Jackson once again remained No. 7 in the private school poll. Published in The WCP 10.30.12
