Skyhawk soccer freshman earns OVC weekly award

Posted: Friday, October 19, 2012 12:01 pm

Saphyra Coombs-James, a freshman forward on the UT Martin soccer team, has been named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Coombs-James had a remarkable week for UT Martin, leading the Skyhawks to a pair of victories which improved them to 8-5-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the OVC. UT Martin is currently in first place in the league standings, holding a three-point lead over SIU Edwardsville with three regular-season matches left to play.
In Friday’s 2-0 victory over Morehead State, Coombs-James jumpstarted the offense and ensured the Skyhawks would not trail for the entirety of the match. The Brampton, Ontario native found teammate Alyssa Curtis for an assist on the eventual game-winning goal, scored just 29 seconds into the match.
Two days later, Coombs-James had a part in all three goals in UT Martin’s 3-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky. She found the back of the net twice in a span of 16 minutes in the first half while also recording an assist on Midori Sera’s goal in the 66th minute.
The 5-10 speedster became just the seventh Skyhawk in program history to record at least five points in a single match.
Overall, Coombs-James has been sensational all season long, ranking in the top-10 in five OVC statistical categories. She ranks second in the league in points (18) and game-winning goals (two), third in goals (seven), fourth in assists (four) and ninth in shots per match (2.20). Her 18 points and seven goals already rank amongst UT Martin’s best single-season totals.
